The border guard detained Afghans Abdul in March. The Afghan has claimed that he came to Latvia because of sports, because he is a professional wrestler. As a punishment for illegal border crossing, the court sentenced him to five months in Riga Central Prison, but after his release he was transferred to Mucenieki.
The man now claims that he does not want to stay in the European Union, but to return to Afghanistan, where his sick mother and old father are. For several weeks, the Afghan has asked the State Border Guard to carry out the deportation back to Afghanistan, but this has not happened.
The State Border Guard explains that this is not possible because Covid-19 does not allow flights to countries outside the European Union. On the other hand, the two airlines, which could theoretically operate a flight to Afghanistan through several transit countries, have refused to carry the deportees.
“These people are specially marked on the passenger lists, they have to buy special tickets and these tickets have to be agreed with the security services of the airline concerned, and only with the approval of these security services can we buy such tickets and plan a route. we are not getting approval from these airlines, but we have no other alternative solutions, “said Marek Honavko, head of the State Border Guard ‘s Return and Asylum Division.
Now the State Border Guard is discussing whether it would be possible to do so if a Latvian Border Guard convoy flies with it. This, in turn, would cost Latvia several thousand euros.
The deportation of illegal immigrants from Vietnam, Georgia, Cuba and other countries has similar problems.
