Duda Praises Rival Trzaskowski as Term Ends
Outgoing President Expresses Respect Despite Political Differences
As his second term draws to a close, President Andrzej Duda has spoken candidly about his relationship with Rafał Trzaskowski, the political rival he twice defeated in presidential elections.
Unexpected Accord
In an interview with WPOLSKA24, Duda revealed a surprising level of personal regard for Trzaskowski, stating, “I know, like, and respect him.” He acknowledged significant policy disagreements but emphasized their ability to maintain a cordial personal connection.
“Rafał has different views than me, he has a different view on Poland than me, he probably has a different view on the presidency than I and many issues see differently and we differ in many matters, but we are able to sit normally, talk, embrace our hand, laugh together, joke, to talk about joint friends.”
—Andrzej Duda
The outgoing president highlighted their capacity for civil discourse, noting that despite their opposing political stances, they can engage in normal conversations and maintain friendly relations. This personal rapport contrasts with their high-stakes electoral battles.
New Presidency Looms
Duda‘s departure from office marks the upcoming inauguration of Karol Nawrocki on August 6. Nawrocki, endorsed by the PiS party, secured victory in the recent presidential election, once again overcoming Trzaskowski.
Trzaskowski, the current mayor of Warsaw, has faced defeat in two presidential contests against PiS-backed candidates. In 2025, he won the first round but was ultimately outperformed by Nawrocki in the subsequent run-off.
Globally, the transition of presidential power can significantly impact a nation’s political direction. For instance, in the United States, presidential transitions can lead to shifts in economic policy, as seen with the Biden administration’s focus on climate initiatives compared to its predecessor (BBC News, 2022).
