The 2017 Wimbledon final was quickly decided. With 3: 6, 6: 1 and 6: 4, the Swiss Roger Federer clearly prevailed against his Croatian competitor Marin Čilić. For Roger Federer it was already that eighth Wimbledon win – and the last one to date. Of course there special congratulations attached were and there were for Roger Federer too.
Kate congratulated him personally and insisted on deviating from the protocol of the event. Because the Duchess of Cambridge not only presented Roger Federer with the coveted trophy, but also kissed him on the cheek – and three times! In Switzerland this is quite common as a greeting, but definitely not in England.
While William opted for the more reserved handshake, he let it go Kate didn’t take this little special moment with the tennis legend and probably for a very special reason. Because Kate and William have been connected with Roger Federer and his wife Mirka for years a close friendship. A big indication of this: The sports star was even invited to the wedding of Kate’s sister Pippa Middleton.
