Druze Leader Calls for Southern Syria Independence, Cites Foreign Backing for New “National Guard“
As-Suwayda, Syria – A leading Druze religious figure in southern Syria is openly calling for independence for the As-Suwayda province, claiming the move is supported by unnamed “guarantor countries.” Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, a prominent voice within the Druze community, announced the formation of a “national Guard” – a unified military force for the province – at the behest of these foreign powers.Al-Hijri alleges the Druze community faces an ongoing “annihilation campaign” from extremist groups, echoing ancient persecution like the infamous massacre in Antakya during the Ottoman era. He claims recent events mirror that historical violence, necessitating a robust defense force.
“The guarantor countries asked us to make this army,” Al-Hijri stated, adding the National Guard is prepared for “all scenarios.” The force has already drawn support from key local factions, including the “Men of Dignity Movement” and the ”Al-Jabal Brigade,” along wiht numerous other armed groups. In a statement on August 9th, Al-Hijri specifically thanked countries that have supported the druze cause, singling out Israel and former US President Donald Trump for their “clear position in supporting minorities and rejecting tyranny.”
The call for independence comes amidst ongoing unrest in As-Suwayda. Violent clashes erupted in July between Bedouin and Druze factions, and demonstrations calling for an end to a perceived “siege” of the province have become frequent. While the Syrian government denies a siege, access to the region remains restricted, hindering the delivery of aid.
Al-Hijri places the blame for the recent turmoil squarely on the Syrian government, accusing them of failing to negotiate in good faith and
