Divers from the fire brigade of the East Limburg relief zone found the body of the 19-year-old swimmer from Maasmechelen on Friday morning.

The young man was Thursday got into difficulties in the gravel pool Het Greven along the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal in Lanklaar (Dilsen-Stokkem). Mayor Sofie Vandeweerd (Open Vld) of Dilsen-Stokkem has confirmed this.
The young man was part of a group of friends from Maasmechelen, who had gone to cool off in the gravel pond on Thursday. Swimming in such a meter deep gravel pond is not allowed and of course dangerous, given the cold undercurrents. While swimming, the young man got into trouble around 7 p.m. He submerged and was not found by his friends. About sixteen divers had searched until midnight. The body was finally found on Friday morning.
The gravel pond is located between the dyke of the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal and the Rachels street in Lanklaar.
