Dropbox bug causes Airdrop to stop working

Due to changes in the Mac OS, Dropbox is rolling out an update to its Mac application that makes major changes to how the application works under the surface. For example, the Dropbox folder itself is moved from your home folder (or any other location) to ~/Library/CloudStorage.

This is not a problem for most people, but may cause it for some users, especially those who subscribe to a lot of space. Those who used to store the Dropbox folder on an external drive can no longer do so, which may mean that they can no longer keep all files locally as there is no room on the Mac’s internal storage.

A new problem has now also appeared which seems to be a bug, or perhaps rather a mistake on Dropbox’s part. Namely, users have started Report about problems receiving files via Airdrop.

Common to those affected is that they have updated to the new Dropbox version and use the Dropbox backup function that moves folders such as Documents and Downloads from the user folder to the Dropbox folder.

Airdrop puts received files in Downloads, but this doesn’t seem to work properly when the folder is actually in ~/Library/CloudStorage/Dropbox/. Users who have turned off the backup feature in Dropbox have got Airdrop back.

Dropbox support staff appear to be aware of the issue, but so far have not said anything about when a fix might be ready or whether it can be fixed at all without a change from Apple.
