Drive-in cinema screening also counts for Oscar nominations this year | NOW

To qualify for an Oscar, films may also be shown by drive-in cinemas this year. Organizer The Academy announced this on Wednesday.

Normally, films must have been shown in cinemas in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami or Atlanta for at least seven days before the deadline. In one of those major American cities, they must also be shown at least three times a day, at least once between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM.

In the first three cities mentioned, the cinemas are not yet open due to the corona crisis, but many temporary drive-in cinemas are being set up, where enthusiasts can watch a film from their car. The Academy also considers such screenings to be official screenings this year. The films also only need to be shown once a day. The drive-in cinemas are usually outside and therefore dependent on the dark evening hours.

The Academy previously announced that films that would actually be released in theaters, but only released on demand, can compete for the prestigious awards. All exceptions are temporary and apply due to the COVID-19 outbreak and its impact on the film and cinema industry.

In June it was announced that the 93rd edition of the awards ceremony has been moved from February 28 to April 23, 2021. In April, the organization of the American film awards announced that it would temporarily relax the selection procedure for the same reason.
