Drinking Green Tea and Coffee Can Lower Diabetes Risk of Death

New research reveals that drinking green tea and coffee every day can reduce the risk of death for diabetics. This is the explanation!

To reduce the risk of death, one way to do it is by consuming green tea and coffee regularly. This is revealed in new research, as reported by Science Daily (20/10).

Green tea and coffee is said to contain bioactive compounds that are beneficial to the body. The impact is greater, can reduce the risk of death in people with type 2 diabetes.

This study was conducted for 5 years on 4,923 Japanese participants who registered in The Fukuoka Diabetes Registry. It consisted of 2,790 men and 2,133 women with a mean age of 66 years.

This study looked at the effect of drug treatment and lifestyle in type 2 diabetes patients. Patients were required to complete a food and beverage questionnaire containing 58 questions.

The question is how much green tea and coffee they consume each day. They were also asked to provide information about their lifestyle, such as regular exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, and bedtime.

Measurements of height, weight and pressure as well as blood samples were also taken. The point is to check the potential risk of death.

As a result, as many as 607 participants did not drink green tea and 1,143 participants drank a cup of green tea per day. Then, as many as 1,384 participants drank 2-3 glasses of green tea per day, and 1,784 participants consumed 4 cups or more per day.

As for coffee, 994 participants did not drink coffee and 1,306 participants drank almost one cup of coffee per day. Then, 963 participants drank one cup of coffee per day, and 1,660 participants drank 2 cups or more per day.

During the study, 309 people (218 men and 91 women) died. The cause is due to cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Those who drank either green tea and coffee were less likely to die than those who did not drink at all.

Those who drank up to 1 cup of green tea were associated with a 15% lower risk of death. For those who drank 2-3 cups the odds were 27% lower. Then those who drank 4 cups or more had a 40% lower chance.

For those who drank almost 1 cup of coffee per day the risk was 12% lower. For those who drank 1 cup a day 19% lower. Then for 2 cups or higher the odds are 41% lower.

Then what about those who drink both? For those who consumed 2-3 cups of green tea plus 2 cups or more of coffee the risk of death was 51% lower.

Then for those who drank 4 cups of green tea or more plus 1 cup of coffee every day 58% lower risk. For those who combined 4 or more cups of green tea with 2 or more cups of coffee per day, the risk of death was 63% lower.

This step can be an alternative for people with type 2 diabetes. There’s nothing wrong with trying, because green tea and coffee are indeed healthy drinks.

Green tea contains several antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, such as phenols, theanine, and caffeine. Likewise, coffee that is high in caffeine is thought to change insulin production and sensitivity.

“This prospective cohort study demonstrates that consumption green tea and coffee was significantly associated with a reduction in all causes of death. The effect may be additive, “said the researchers about their findings.
