Jago had been suffering from pain for weeks. The condition of the elderly big cat steadily deteriorated. At over 16 years old, Jago was already older than lions get in the wild. Zoo lions can sometimes live up to 20 years.

The Dresden lion (arrived from Denmark in 2007) has hardly eaten lately. The zoo said he usually vomited what little he ate. When the drugs stopped working, Jago was examined under anesthesia. Veterinarians found an enlarged spleen, kidney disease and anemia.

“Due to the poor prognosis at this time and to avoid further suffering, we made the decision to euthanize the animal while it was still under anesthesia,” the zoo wrote on Facebook. The body is to be examined.

Jago had lived in Dresden with the lioness Layla since he was 17 months old. In 2012, two offspring, Abaja and Damien, were born. Mother and children still live in the Dresden facility, now only the three of them.
