Drakkar head coach resigns

BAIE-COMEAU | On the eve of its 24th training camp, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar has just suffered a heavy loss following the resignation of its head coach Jon Goyens.

In office during the 2019-2020 campaign, shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Goyens made his decision known to the leaders of the club on Friday morning, citing family reasons to explain the reasons for his departure.

“Earlier today, Jon informed the team of his desire to stay with his family during this time of pandemic. The organization therefore accepted his resignation, including the family aspect behind his decision, ”the Drakkar leadership first indicated in a statement.

“I admit it was a shock to me when I got the call from Jon. It was not easy for us, but also for him. For our part, we have always worked hard while respecting the human aspect and that is why we can understand his choice, ”then commented General Manager Pierre Rioux.

A few hours before the next kick-off of activities, the CEO recognizes that the context in general is not obvious. “For over a month, all the hockey and administrative staff have been working to adjust and respect the various instructions. We have no choice but to go ahead and plan well for the next season. ”

The management will focus on the opening of the training camp and will then take the steps to find a successor to the 41-year-old man, father of a little boy, who will have been the 11th head coach in the history of the north-shore formation. Goyens still had two years to go on his contract.

In relief

Assistant coaches Jean-François Grégoire and Antoine Samuel will take over and supervise on-ice activities along with other hockey staff.
