Drake University Launches $6 Million Campaign to Revitalize Historic Drake Stadium
Des Moines, IA - Drake University today announced a $6 million capital campaign to fund significant renovations to Drake Stadium, a landmark venue celebrating its centennial year. The Drake Stadium Centennial Campaign will focus on modernizing infrastructure to support both Drake University athletics and its continued role as a premier host for national and international track and field events.
Opened in 1925, Drake Stadium is renowned as the home of the Drake Relays, a world-famous track and field competition, and also Drake football. The upgrades aim to ensure the stadium remains competitive for hosting major events like the USA Track and Field Championships,NCAA Outdoor Championships,and AAU Junior Olympics. Key improvements will include replacing track and field surfaces, installing reversible runways for long jump, triple jump, and pole vault to meet NCAA championship requirements, and constructing a permanent hospitality area for guests.
The campaign has already received a considerable boost with a $600,000 leadership gift from Prairie Meadows. The last major renovations to Drake Stadium occurred in 2006. University officials state the investment is crucial for preserving the stadium’s legacy and positioning it for another century of athletic and community engagement.
