Krakow Comics Community Mourns the Loss of Dr. Rafał Kołsut
Krakow, Poland – Dr. Rafał Kołsut, a prominent figure in the Polish comics scene adn academic, has died, leaving the Krakow community in mourning. The news was shared by colleagues and friends on social media this afternoon.
Kołsut’s involvement with media began in childhood with an appearance on the TV program “Ziarno.” He later pursued a career in dubbing and academic research,earning a doctorate from the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. His doctoral research focused on the history of comics and animation, and the depiction of social changes in visual narratives. He authored both scientific and popular science texts and taught at the Jagiellonian university, the Fr. Józef Tischner University in Krakow, and the University of the National Education Commission in Krakow.
Beyond academia, Kołsut was a driving force in Krakow’s local comic book community.He contributed to comics magazines, wrote scripts and articles, reviewed works, and organized events, most notably the annual Krakow Comics Festival, which flourished under his leadership.
“Sad news from Krakow. In the afternoon I learned that Rafał Kołsut, a long-time member and then, for the last two years, the President of the Krakow Comics Association, an employee of the Nicolaus Copernicus University, a tireless organizer and host of the Krakow Comics Festival, has died,” wrote comic book creator Rafał Szłapa on Facebook.”Just a few days ago he announced the institution of an exhibition of comic book boards depicting Krakow. Due to the support I have recently received from him, we arranged a meeting. Now I know that it will never happen. Rest in peace, Rafale.”
Kołsut was remembered by those who knew him as a passionate and dedicated individual who brought heart to every project he undertook.
