Controversy Surrounds Indonesian Election Commission’s Spending
Jakarta – the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU) is facing scrutiny over its spending habits, with allegations of excessive budgeting for luxury items adn questionable procurement practices. These concerns have been brought to light by both members of the House of Representatives and a coalition of anti-corruption organizations.
DPR Member Raises Concerns
Ahmad Doli Kurnia, a member of the House of Representatives Commission II, revealed that his party had identified a pattern of lavish spending within the KPU. this includes budgets allocated for helicopter procurement, official residences, and Toyota Alphard vehicles for commissioners. These revelations came in response to a report filed with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) by a Civil Society Coalition, which questioned the KPU’s use of a private jet for monitoring the 2024 election.
I don’t know whether they enter or not, they have also used the helicopter. So. Well, I don’t know whether this is a company, or the helicopter is part of a private jet, this is what we already know.
Ahmad Doli Kurnia, Member of the House of Representatives Commission II
Mr.Kurnia stated that the issue of helicopter usage had been previously raised by the DPR. He also questioned the necessity of providing commissioners with both official residences and apartments.
The commissioners, there are two of them, the official residence has, the apartment has, given. well, why should it be two or two? why not just one? Right?
Ahmad Doli Kurnia, Member of the House of Representatives Commission II
He further elaborated on the number of vehicles assigned to each commissioner, stating that some had as many as three. He recalled an instance where the KPU sought to purchase a fourth vehicle, an Alphard, prompting a reminder from his party about the need for fiscal responsibility. Their car was one commission that coudl be three, there were three. Even at that time they were the last time they bought an Alphard car, right? And at that time we heard, they wanted to buy again the fourth car. Well, so at that time we reminded. Only if not mistaken the car did not work,
Mr. Kurnia explained.
