DPRK closes railway connection with Russia due to coronavirus

The DPRK authorities closed the passenger railway connection with Russia for an indefinite period due to the spread of the coronavirus, TASS reports citing the ticket office in Pyongyang, which is the official public representative office of the country’s railways.

Earlier, between the DPRK and Russia, twice a month a wagon ran between Pyongyang and Moscow, one wagon a month went from Pyongyang to Khabarovsk, and four wagons went from Moscow to the Korean border station Tumangan four times a month, the agency said.

“It was decided to suspend starting Monday the sending of trains along the route Pyongyang – Moscow and Pyongyang – Khabarovsk. Currently, the following passenger cars from Moscow to the Tumangan station, located on the territory of the DPRK, in accordance with the quarantine measures introduced, will no longer be able to cross the Russian-Korean border, ”the source said.

Recall that the number of coronavirus victims in China exceeded 360, infected more than 17.2 thousand people. A few days ago, the first two cases of virus infection were detected in Russia. Both patients – in the Trans-Baikal Territory and the Tyumen Region – are Chinese citizens who arrived from China. Against the background of the spread of the virus, Russia suspended railway passenger traffic with China. The first fatal case of the disease was recorded outside of China – in the Philippines. The World Health Organization has recognized the outbreak of the new coronavirus as an emergency.
