Dozens of young people have suffered from partial or total spinal cord injury in the past two years from the use of nitrous oxide.

There are certainly 64, but probably even more. The youngest was 17 years old, the oldest 30. This is confirmed by neurologist Lucille Dorresteijn of the Medisch Spectrum Twente after a report by RTL Nieuws.

Dorresteijn is involved with the Dutch Association for Neurology (NVN). He approached 78 hospitals and received a reply from 42. There, 64 young people with spinal cord injuries were treated.

Nitrous oxide is very common for young people. Dorresteijn: “At school parties there is a tank with laughing gas. They can just take that. What are we doing? It pisses me off. We know what alcohol and drugs do to a developing young brain, but we don’t know about nitrous oxide. ”

Those who use a lot of nitrous oxide for a long time can become deficient in vitamin B12. This can eventually damage the nerves in the spinal cord, among other things.
