Dozens injured in wildfires in southern Turkey

Dozens of people have been injured in forest fires in Turkey’s Antalya province. The Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah writes that at least three people have been killed. 58 people are still in hospital.

The wildfires broke out in several places yesterday in a forest in the city of Manavgat, about 75 kilometers from the tourist attraction Antalya. The area is experiencing a heat wave and there is a lot of wind. This allowed the fire to spread quickly. The fire service suspects that the fires were started.

Eighteen villages in the area had to be evacuated due to smoke nuisance and villages in neighboring provinces also had to be evacuated.

The fire is largely under control, Turkey’s agriculture minister said. He says a total of 41 wildfires have been raging, of which ten have yet to be brought under control.
