In February last year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sharply attacked the LGBT movement in Turkey, accusing him of “vandalism” and of alienating young people from his party from her cause. Erdogan’s comments came after Turkish police detained four people for depicting Islam’s holiest site with pictures of the LGBT rainbow flag during a student protest.
Homosexuality has been legal throughout the history of modern Turkey.
But gay people often face harassment, and LGBT events – including the Istanbul Gay Pride Parade – were blocked by Erdogan.
