The police arrested more than 50 people during a silent march in Hong Kong against the planned new Chinese government security law. 53 demonstrators were arrested on charges of participating in an unauthorized gathering, the police said on Facebook.
Riot police officers watched the protest move through Kowloon District. They used pepper spray when there was some wrangling. On Saturday, police rejected an application for a memorial march on July 1, the anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover from Britain to China 23 years ago. Such an elevator would violate the ban on the corona pandemic, according to which no more than 50 people may gather, the police said.
The new security law is expected to be adopted before the end of the month. However, the draft has not yet been published. Civil rights activists and protesters fear the Chinese government will become increasingly influential and Hong Kong will lose its autonomy through the law.
