Dozens are killed by storm Eta in Central America

In more southern Panama, eight more people are still missing after floods and landslides near the border with Costa Rica. “The situation is worrisome, a lot of help is needed,” said the mayor of one of the affected areas. Many houses have been flooded in several Central American countries.

Record

Eta ranks as one of the most powerful hurricanes in Central America in years, although its strength has declined in the meantime. The last comparable hurricane to make landfall in Nicaragua was Felix, in 2007.

Eta was the 28th hurricane to be named this season. With that lack the tropical cyclone set the record from 2005, when 27 hurricanes were named.

Hurricane Eta originated in the Caribbean Sea, south of Jamaica. The tropical storm is now expected to move towards Cuba.
