An additional EUR 200,000 will probably be made available for the PrEP pilot. That is a doubling of the current budget, which means that four hundred extra men will have access to the pilot.
Men with an increased risk of HIV can also get the PrEP pill from their GP, but not all GPs want to prescribe the drug, so some have to rely on the pilot.
For access to the pilot, there is now a large waiting list. The men who are helped with the extra money flow through from that list: “The GGD gives priority to people in a vulnerable position, such as men with high risk behavior or with a low income,” the municipality said in a press release.
Alderman Alexander Scholtes (Care) believes that sexual health still receives too little attention. With the results of the pilot, he wants to talk to the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to make PrEP widely available to all Amsterdammers: “Because we want to achieve our goal: zero new HIV infections in Amsterdam by 2026,” says Scholtes. .
Also extra money for sexual health
In addition to the investment in PrEP, the municipality is also making an extra 315,000 euros available for sexual health. The money will be used to increase the capacity in the district outpatient clinics Center for Sexual Health in Southeast, New West and North. The care provided by the trans clinic will also be strengthened, and more people should be able to get tested for HIV.
2900 men are currently receiving the HIV prevention pill through the pilot. The extra investments in the PrEP pilot and sexual health will be incorporated in the Autumn Memorandum, after which the municipal council will decide on it.
