Dota 2’s The International 10 hit a record $ 34,396,000

Dota 2‘s The International, one of the world’s largest esports tournaments, broke its own record for the highest-grossing esports event, with this year’s prize pool already totaling over 34 396 000 $. The previous record was a prize pool of $ 34.3 million from last year’s event.

Dota 2 Developer Valve has been forced to indefinitely delay this year’s iteration, The International 10, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This delay was announced in April. Valve has yet to announce a new date. It is not clear if the tournament will even take place in 2020.

Valve has said he “cannot commit yet” to a new date for The International 10 or the return of the Dota Pro Circuit, a series of events that determine who qualifies for The International, in a tweet on Monday.

The International tournament prize pool is funded by purchases of Dota 2 Battle Pass, which costs $ 9.99 (or $ 29.35 to unlock 50 additional levels, or $ 44.99 to skip 100 levels at a time). These passes reward players with in-game rewards and cosmetics as they progress through the levels. A quarter of the proceeds from Battle Pass purchases are invested in the massive tournament prize pool, so as long as players continue to buy, the prize pool will continue to grow.

Valve previously announced that the current Battle Pass would be available until September 19. That’s a long time for the pot to keep growing.
