d’Or – Weather forecast. Why has Dijon been one of the coldest cities in France for several days?

It has been the same for several days. Cards Meteo France point Dijon as one of the cities in France where it is coldest, while elsewhere, temperatures are above normal for the season.

A peculiarity which comes from a well-known phenomenon, and which occurs several times a year in the east of the Côte-d’Or. Dijon is located near the Saône plain. “A particular area enclosed between two reliefs: the Jura and the Morvan. When the weather is calm, very high pressure and windless like these last days, it is dark 16 hours a day, and the sun is not strong enough, the cold air mass remains flat on the ground and the cold accumulates, ”explains Météo France Bourgogne.

With the humidity coming from the Saône in particular, which condenses with the cold, since last week we have been entitled to freezing days, with the fog as a bonus.

Only in the Saône plain?

If this cold is not exceptional for the season, it contrasts with the values recorded elsewhere in France or even a few kilometers from Dijon. Thus, Météo France noted less than 6 degrees in Dijon at 3 p.m. this Wednesday against 11.5 ° C, for example, 40 km away, in Pouilly-en-Auxois or 15.6 ° C in Lyon.

Still according to Météo France Bourgogne, this peculiarity is not only found in the Saône plain. These same weather conditions can be observed in the Alsace plain and in the Geneva plain. These two sectors have also experienced roughly the same phenomenon as us on Tuesday afternoon.

When will it be less cold?

Good news for this weekend. The north wind will pick up allowing a change in air mass. If it will bring more freshness to the scale of the country and the whole of Burgundy, it will paradoxically probably bring more softness to Dijon because of the evacuation of the mass of cold air blocked for a few days. We can therefore expect to gain a few small degrees.
