Doomsday Clock: 100 Seconds to the Apocalypse

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists has announced that the Doomsday Watch will stay 100 seconds until midnight, as it was in 2021. Scientists point to nuclear weapons, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic as “an existential threat to humanity.”

The decision was announced by Rachel Bronson at a video conference in Washington. She is the president of the authoritative American magazine “Bulletin of Atomic Physicists”, on the cover of which the freezing clock first appeared in 1947.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic clock created in 1947 by the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists of the University of Chicago. The closer the time is to midnight, the closer it is Earth to a global catastrophe.

75 years later, the situation in international security has not stabilized. On the contrary, the clock stays closest the apocalypse that ends civilization, because the world is in an extremely dangerous moment.

Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, said the watch “continues to show danger, reminding us how much work needs to be done. to ensure a safer and healthier planet. In principle, from 2020, the world remains 100 seconds from its destruction.

As noted in a statement published on the magazine’s website, “this decision does not in any way mean that international security has stabilized.” According to the authors, on the contrary, it means that the world is “frozen in an extremely dangerous situation“.

“In 2019, we called it a new anomaly and it unfortunately continues,” scientists say.

The prognosis was the most favorable in the distant 1991 – 17 minutes. This is explained by the fact of the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the USSR, but also by the hopes for democracy in the world.
