Doom Eternal will not support ray tracing at start / News / Overclockers.ua

Last summer, the id Software team promised to add ray tracing effects to the Doom Eternal shooter. Less than two months are left before the release of the game, but it seems that Ray Tracing support will have to wait some more time after the release. Recall that initially they planned to release Doom Eternal on November 22, but then the game was postponed to March 20 due to the insufficient availability of the product.

As Marty Stratton of the development staff said, ray tracing is currently not a top priority for id Software. On the contrary, the studio is busy achieving stable performance on all platforms including PC, Xbox One, PS4, Switch and Stadia, with each platform having its own priority. According to Mr. Stratton, ray tracing “does not necessarily expand our audience.”

In any case, this does not mean the final abandonment of ray tracing technology for Doom Eternal. In the future, developers may return to this issue, which will probably become more relevant after the release of nextgen-consoles with hardware support for Ray Tracing.
