Don’t Underestimate the Complications of Covid-19 in Children and Adolescents Page all

KOMPAS.com – Most children and adolescents infected with the Covid-19 virus have only mild or no symptoms. However, there are several conditions in children that make it vulnerable to serious complications.

A new report by the American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that older children and adolescents are more at risk for developing deadly complications, including multisystem inflammatory syndrome and respiratory failure.

The report analyzes data on 121 children who died from Covid-19-related illnesses between February and July 2020 in America. Of these, 70 percent are aged 10-20 years.

“The youngest children seem to be most protected from this virus,” says Center for Infectious Diseases for Children Director, Camille Sabella, MD.

Three out of four children who die from Covid-19 have at least one underlying medical condition. The medical conditions most commonly reported are asthma, obesity, heart conditions, and neurological and developmental conditions.

Children with this condition are advised to take extra precautions against Covid-19.

Experts are not yet clear why Covid-19 infections are generally milder in children than in adults.

According to Sabella, there is a possibility that it is related to the receptors exposed to the virus in the body, but the cause is still speculative.

In addition, researchers are also still working to better understand MIS-C, an inflammatory condition that occurs in 12 percent of children who die from Covid-19.

“This is a new syndrome that we are studying further. What long-term complications, especially those involving the heart, remain to be seen,” said Sabella.

Although the effect of infection is mild, children play a key role in spreading the virus in the community.

Therefore, it is important for parents and children to remain careful.

Continue to take protective measures such as maintaining distance, avoiding large gatherings, wearing masks for children over 2 years of age, and washing hands frequently.

These precautions are also taken to prevent children and adolescents from spreading the virus.

If your child shows symptoms of Covid-19, such as fever or cough, don’t delay contacting the doctor.
