‘Don’t get on your knees for Flemish people in 2024’

French speakers urgently need to prepare for what comes after 2024, says MP Pierre-Yves Jeholet (MR).

The French Community is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary and it doesn’t look like another fifty will be added. Prime Minister Pierre-Yves Jeholet (MR) says in The evening that ‘it is time for the French speakers to say what they still want to do together’. The French Community is responsible for education in Wallonia and Brussels, among other things. A power that many in the Walloon government have longed for.

But simply abolishing the level without deciding where the French speakers want to go is not a good idea, according to Jeholet. ‘In the light of 2024, we as French speakers must stand strong and not go down on our knees, like beggars, before the Flemish. It would suit them well that we (Walloons and Brussels residents, ed.) no longer speak to each other and do not have a common goal.’

Don’t weaken Brussels

This thinking exercise must also take place within the MR, he says. ‘If they see us coming to ask for money again, without us even having a project for the future, they just laugh at us in Flanders.’

Jeholet does not like a Belgium with four regions. ‘That’s too simple. And the reality is complex. In any case, I do not want to isolate and weaken Brussels. Our capital is the capital of Europe, that would be suicidal. But today if I see the contempt and disdain with which some Walloon politicians speak about Brussels …’
