Dongkuk Steel and workers’ swearing… Snagged in a steel coil

◀ Anchor ▶

At the Dongguk Steel Mill in Busan, an employee in his 50s was caught between 10 tons of round, steel coils.

It seems that I was unable to cope with the malfunction of the machine as I was working alone.

One worker was caught between the steel’coils’.

The steel coil on the crane weighs only 15 tons, and the coil behind it weighs 6 tons.

Yesterday, around 5 pm, 53-year-old A got into an accident at Dongkuk Steel’s Busan factory while unwrapping the coil.

“Because it’s heavy, you can have such a fatal injury even if you pinch it a little. The emergency siren rings, and the management staff is also next to you…”

At the time, A alone operated a crane with a wireless remote control, lifted the coil, and removed the wrapping paper with a working knife.

Police believe the crane is malfunctioning.

“It’s because I move the crane a little bit… and I work by slightly moving the (coil) hanging from the crane.”

The Ministry of Employment and Labor is checking the compliance of safety rules, such as whether the’work plan’ that must be used when handling heavy objects such as coils has been properly prepared.

“When handling heavy objects, you need to prepare a work plan so that you can work safely… There are things like that. We carefully put it in the work plan and do that (we are investigating whether it is possible.)”

In the Dongkuk Steel Plant, accidents in which workers die are continuing year after year.

A month ago, a father in his 50s who was delivering food materials at the Dongkuk Steel Pohang Plant was found dead after 5 hours because he got stuck in a cargo elevator.

In particular, at the Busan plant where the accident happened this time, one person was killed by a hydraulic machine being repaired in January of last year, and two years ago, an employee was seriously injured due to a pipe rupture.
