NEW YORK (Nettavisen): The United States and President Joe Biden have been criticized for already introducing an entry ban for several African countries on Monday this week, despite the fact that they had not registered any omicron infection.

Entry ban from eight countries
The omicron variant of the coronavirus is now spreading all over the world, and so far Norway is at the very top of the world when it comes to infection.

While in Norway around 20 cases have been confirmed, the omicron variant has been discovered in five states in the USA, and in New York so far five individual cases have been discovered.

As a result of the omicron variant, the United States and President Joe Biden decided to close all air traffic from several African countries on Monday.
The travel ban applied to a total of eight African countries, even though only two of them had so far discovered the omicron variant.

The eight countries affected by the press conference from Monday this week were: Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini and Zimbabwe.
Of these, only South Africa and Botswana had discovered the omicron variant on Monday.

During a White House press conference earlier this week, Anthony Fauci, top of infection control, was put under pressure as to why the United States and President Biden are introducing travel bans for several African countries, despite the fact that they had not registered any infections.

– There are zero cases of omicron in Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho and Mozambique. What is it that justifies a travel ban on countries that have zero cases of the omicron variant? asked reporter Simon Ateba from Today News Africa at the press conference.
– You know, it was a very good and important question and we have struggled a bit with this, Fauci answered first.
– But what we wanted was to see if we could buy ourselves some time, so I hope we find out about this and that the travel ban is removed before it has any major impact on the countries, Fauci said.

– This is «Afrophobia»
Both African leaders and health organizations have reacted to the travel bans imposed on African countries.
Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera said the restrictions were an expression of “Afrophobia”, while the World Health Organization (WHO) claimed that general travel bans to prevent the spread of the omicron variant of the coronavirus would not be effective.

In the United States, the travel ban is also linked to President Joe Biden’s criticism of the travel ban that then-President Donald Trump introduced against China in 2020.
In late January 2020, the United States declared a public health crisis due to the Wuhan virus, and Donald Trump then introduced a ban on entry from China.
