The Dominican Government reported this Friday that it will send, as a donation, 505 thousand vaccines to neighboring countries of the Caribbean and Central America, in order to protect their population against COVID-19.

He said the donation is made at the request of neighboring nations. “The national authorities ordered the immediate start of an international cooperation program to help, to the extent of our possibilities, these sister countries affected by the unfair and unequal international distribution of vaccines,” the government said in a statement.

And in that sense, he indicated that “Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez maintains permanent contact with his counterparts in Central America and the Caribbean to respond to the specific demand of each of the countries.”

He explained that the requests received so far are the following: 100 thousand doses for Haiti, 101 one thousand doses for Honduras and 304 thousand doses for Guatemala.

“In total, about 505 thousand doses will be distributed among all the requesting countries so far,” specified the Government.

The Dominican government recalls that the country was a beneficiary of international solidarity when India sent the country 30,000 doses of vaccines, later the Chinese government made a donation of 50,000 doses, which allowed the start of the vaccination program. He also highlighted the support of the private sector, which contributed the money to acquire two million doses of AstraZeneca ”.

“Now that our country has advanced in its inoculation plan at the national level and already counting on a broader and more diversified vaccine inventory, we must show other peoples the solidarity that we received in the past. This pandemic has taught us that we will not be protected until we are all vaccinated, ”the government said in the statement.
