Dominic Thiem is in round two in New York

In the middle of the first set in the match between Dominic Thiem and Jaume Munar, a statistic could be admired that summed up the course of the game in the Louis Armstrong Stadium well: Ten winning strokes were noted for Thiem, only two for his opponent. Austria’s number one was the more aggressive player and also took the lead 3-2 with the first break. However, when it came to serving the sentence, the favorite wobbled again. With his third chance Munar, who trains at Rafael Nadal’s academy, equalized to 5: 5.

So tiebreaker. In the short decision, Thiem initially let a 5: 1 lead almost completely melt away, and after the 6: 4 he gave two set balls. The fact that Thiem was still able to win the first act was thanks to a courageous smash from the baseline and an ace that sealed the 8: 6 in the tie-break.

Munar has to give up after the second set

The start of the second set went well for Thiem, after several missed chances he got Munar’s serve to 2-0. And immediately cashed the rebreak. Thiem coped well with the setback and had meanwhile played his opponent quite tired: The new break to 5: 3 was very easy for the number two of the tournament. A few moments later, Thiem served the second movement – and Jaume Munar had to give up.

Thiem was quite satisfied with his performance in the on-court interview: He had stood on the court for almost two hours, Munar and he had strong rallies. Thiem only wished his inferior opponent the best.

In the second round, Dominic Thiem meets Indian Sumit Nagal on Thursday, who was able to assert himself against Bradley Klahn in four sets.
