Dolphins captured on camera swimming in the Bronx River, New York

Two dolphins were filmed in the Bronx River at New York several days ago, reports The Guardian. The city’s parks and recreation department confirmed the information in a tweet posted on January 19, welcoming the return of cetaceans to the river after several years of absence. “This is great news – it shows that the decades-long effort to restore the river as a healthy habitat is working,” the service wrote on the social networks.

The Bronx River suffered from a pollution related to the dumping of waste by the factories around. For many years, it turned into an open dumping ground for New York’s businesses and various neighborhoods. But efforts have been made to reverse the trend and fish have even been reintroduced to attract dolphins, says the British newspaper.

Do not disturb them

“We’ve come a long way through several decades of improving theenvironment, cleaning, water quality, better environmental stewardship, better relationships. All of this helps the global environment and then leads to the recovery of these ecosystems,” said the Guardian Howard Rosenbaum, an expert on dauphins.

The Bronx River rises north of New York before plunging into the East River. Bottlenose dolphins had been observed last year in this estuary which separates the American city from the New Jersey. Proud of the return of marine animals to the Bronx, the Department of Parks and Recreation still wanted to warn onlookers: “Make sure they are comfortable during their visit by giving them space and not disturbing them. »
