South Korea is celebrating a critically important milestone in animal welfare as it moves toward ending its dog meat industry.
The nation is approaching its second Bok Nal,a traditional period in July and August known for its hottest days, during which some Koreans have historically consumed dog meat soup. Though, recent trends indicate a sharp decline in demand for dog meat, with a majority of South Koreans supporting a ban on the practice.
Humane World for Animals Korea recently launched a public awareness campaign, “BoksRun at Bok Nal!”, to commemorate the contry’s historic decision to ban the dog meat industry by 2027. the campaign kicked off with a lively event in Seoul, drawing over 100 participants and their canine companions.
The event featured a scenic walk or run, a photo booth and refreshments, fostering a sense of community and celebration of the human-animal bond.A prominent message wall allowed attendees to share their aspirations for a complete and swift cessation of the dog meat industry.
This initiative follows last year’s participation in a cultural festival organized by animal protection groups, which honored dogs affected by the dog meat trade.
