Doctor Admits Cancer Patients are More Interested in Treatment Abroad

JawaPos.com – A number of cancer patients prefer to seek treatment abroad. They feel more trust in the health system abroad. This is also recognized by the medical community.

In the virtual discussion of the Indonesian Cancer Foundation (YKI) on ‘Strategic Policies Towards Quality Cancer Services’, the Chairperson of the YKI National Discussion Committee who is also the Head of the YKI Organization for Central Java
dr. Awal Prasetyo, M.Kes, Sp.ENT-KL, MARS, said that there are big challenges in fighting cancer in Indonesia. Currently, the number of cancer sufferers in Indonesia is increasing and the number of cases of advanced cancer is high when it is first diagnosed.

The low effort of screening and early detection in cancer patients causes high mortality rates. Moreover, a number of patients are more interested in treatment abroad.

“The public’s interest in cancer treatment is still high with the belief that the results of the treatment and the quality obtained can be better. This should be a challenge for all of us,” he said recently.

According to him, this is due to unclear regulations regarding the standardized or quality cancer service system or concept similar to those abroad. And also the uneven distribution of access and health facilities capable of providing cancer services and the uneven distribution of cancer specialists in Indonesia.

He stressed the need for regulations that emphasize the integration of promotive preventive efforts. Curative and rehabilitation efforts are managed comprehensively in a regulation whose orchestration can be played beautifully for the sake of multi-dimensional patient safety.
