Do you have to take out “cybercrime” insurance?

At the start of the year, a new product appeared discreetly in the range of services offered by Proximus: Cyber Care. It is an insurance – developed in partnership with Axa Partners – intended “to protect your digital life and your family against all the dangers of the net”, according to the operator.

For a monthly payment of 4.99 euros, this insurance offers protection against identity theft, payment fraud, the risks of online shopping, data recovery and finally online harassment and defamation.

4,99€

Cyber Care

The monthly price of Proximus insurance designed to protect its customers against all the dangers of the Internet.

On paper, the proposal seems attractive! Especially that cybercrime literally exploded in 2020. For example, there were 7 times more bank fraud than in previous years.

Obligations

Before reviewing some cases of exclusion, be aware thatit is not possible to take out this insurance if you do not have paid antivirus software.

It is not possible to take out this insurance if you do not have paid antivirus software.

In addition, if you make a commitment to Cyber Care, you will not be able to terminate your contract early without charge during the first six months, while the competition (see elsewhere) offers formulas without commitment.

You will also have some obligations to be observed. In particular that of “do not open suspicious emails and delete them immediately“. This duty is surprising, because it is not always possible to identify them as such even before having opened them. Especially for less experienced users of the web, who are part of the target audience of such an offer and who are looking for a service that can protect them against such emails!

Exclusions

Although Cyber Care provides coverage for the recovery of your data, this one does not cover damages resulting negligence. In other words, if you have dropped your smartphone and it no longer deigns to turn on, this insurance will not cover any costs that you will incur to recover your photos.

In addition, data recovery in the event of data erased, blocked or damaged as a result of a ransomware attack or other viruses is also not covered. Cyber Care will therefore not pay the ransom to unlock your data. You might as well know if this is the type of protection you were hoping for.

Claims resulting from a Proximus security breach will not be covered!

More amazing: know that when it comes to identity theft coverage, possible claimss “following a Proximus security breach or any other event that has resulted in the personal data of its customers being leaked ” will … not be supported!

Finally, the acquisition of goods from a private individual, second-hand goods or those not delivered due to an epidemic or containment are excluded from online shopping coverage.

Concurrence

Currently, the “cybercrime” insurance offer dedicated to individuals on the Belgian market remains very limited (which is less the case for the self-employed or SMEs). Moreover, other telecom operators do not (yet) offer such a product.

But if you want to subscribe to one, there is in particular the offer Cyber Safe de Baloise which covers its clients in cases of cyberharcèlement oronline scams (including hacking or phishing with an intervention of up to 7,500 euros per year and per incident) and which provides an alert service in the event of data theft, as well as’assistance service.

In addition, this coverage – which includes legal protection – is without engagement and comes back to 9 euros per month for individual protection or to 13 euros per month for family protection.

The customers of KBC group banks can also take advantage of Cybersecurity Service which provides a antivirus software (to choose between Norton, McAfee and Kapersky) for your different devices, protection against phishing and An assistance.

This service is without commitment and costs 3 euros per month. Note that it covers all members of a family residing under the same roof.

In conclusion, in both cases, don’t forget to read the general conditions of these insurance products to assess whether they really meet your needs.
