Do not expose your medicines to heat

Very high temperatures can affect how your medicines work. To avoid potential adverse effects linked to the heat wave, follow the advice of the National Medicines Safety Agency (ANSM).

“In the event of a heat wave, certain drugs are likely to worsen an exhaustion-dehydration syndrome or heat stroke”, underlines the ANSM. However, “do not stop your treatment without asking the advice of your doctor or pharmacist”. In order to prevent this situation and to preserve the stability and effectiveness of your medicines, “Respect the storage conditions indicated in the package leaflet and avoid exposing your medicines to direct sunlight”.

The advice is the same for blood glucose meters because “Exposing test strips (or electrodes), control solutions and readers to direct sunlight, high temperatures, large temperature variations or a humid atmosphere can affect their proper functioning.”If you have any unusual results, call a healthcare professional before considering any change in treatment.

Beware of the risk of photosensitization

“Certain drugs can cause abnormally exaggerated reactions of the skin when exposed to the sun”,notes the ANSM. This is the case with certain antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, antihistamines, antidepressants or drugs for heart rhythm disturbances. But also drugs applied to the skin such as acne treatments, local antiseptics or antimycotics.
