Environmentalists sound the alarm over pollution of the Dnieper

Environmentalists have identified massive pollution of the waters of the Dnieper river basin, which poses a threat to all living things.

The audit of the Accounts Chamber revealed at least 161 pollutants in the surface waters of the Dnieper river basin. About it informs press service of the department.

The audit reportedly revealed a significant excess of agricultural pesticides, pharmaceuticals, synthetic musk, as well as heavy metals: zinc and copper, as well as mercury, which threaten public health and can lead to an environmental disaster.

In addition, the flowering of the Dnieper is one of the main reasons for the massive pestilence of fish.

“The situation is also aggravated by the shallowing of the river, which occurs due to the lack of dredging, carried out using the river as a transport artery. Thus, the ecological state of the Dnieper basin is actually catastrophic,” the statement says.

“If the ecological situation in the river basin does not improve, the water will continue to be polluted. There will be a need for its complete purification, which will lead to significant pressure on the state budget. this direction “, – warn in the Accounts Chamber.

According to the audit results, during the implementation of the Program in 2013-2020, 16.2% of the planned sewerage networks were built and reconstructed; 0.1% anti-erosion hydraulic structures; 14.3% of storm sewer structures (ensuring the planned level of its length by only 0.2%); cleaner production systems were created at 1.9% of enterprises (three out of 162).

According to research, by the end of this century water level in the Dnieper will decrease by 20%.
