Digital ID Now a Reality in Spain with ‘Midni‘ App
Madrid, Spain – After years of growth, citizens of Spain can now carry their national identification document (DNI) on their smartphones thru the official “Midni” app, marking a notable step towards widespread digital identification. The app, developed by the National Police, provides a legally valid digital version of the physical DNI.
The rollout follows a period of careful observation to ensure the technology’s evolution and security,comparable to the impact of mobile payment systems like Apple Pay and Google Wallet. Officials recognize the increasing reliance on smartphones - for payments, dialogue, travel, and work – and view integrating identification into this ecosystem as a long-awaited advancement.
The Digital DNI has already expanded its uses, recently being approved for voter identification in upcoming elections, eliminating the need to carry a physical ID to the polls.
Currently, the Midni app allows users to:
* Prove identity in person (with data connection)
* Exercise the right to vote
* Sign deeds before a notary
* Prove identity in face-to-face administrative processes
* Verify age of majority
* open bank accounts
* Formalize insurance
* Register in hotels
* Rent vehicles
* Purchase nominative tickets
* Complete face-to-face transactions requiring DNI verification
* Pass building access controls
* Access entertainment venues (cinemas, theaters, concerts)
* Collect parcels
* Collect prescriptions from pharmacies
* Facilitate access in universities and educational centers (public and private)
However, the Digital DNI has limitations:
* Cannot be used for identification via the internet.
* Requires a data connection for face-to-face verification.
* Is not valid as a travel document at borders.
* Cannot be used for identification outside of Spain.
* Cannot be used for telematic authentication or electronic signatures.
