Djokovic – Sinner 5:7, 2:6, 6:3, 6:2, 6:2, Djokovic is in the semi-finals of Wimbledon after a famous turnaround

The defending champion of Serbia, Novak Djokovic, turned the quarterfinals with the Italian Jannik Sinner in Wimbledon and after winning 5:7, 2:6, 6:3, 6:2, 6:2, he can continue to strive for his fourth triumph in a row and seventh overall in London. The number one seed fought with the thirteenth player in the world for more than three and a half hours. The native of Belgrade will compete with the Belgian David Goffin or the British Cameron Norrie to advance to the final.

Among the women, Tatjana Mariaová from Germany became the first semi-finalist. The 34-year-old native of Bad Saulgau defeated compatriot Jule Niemeier 4:6, 6:2, 7:5 and for the first time in her career made it to the top four players of a Grand Slam tournament. The unseeded player, who belongs to the 103rd place in the ranking, will challenge the winner of the duel between Maria Bouzková and Ons Džabúrová.

The 35-year-old Djokovic lost two sets for the first time this year at Wimbledon and had to turn around an unfavorable result of 0:2. From the third set, however, he was 100 percent on his own serve and broke five times against an opponent fifteen years his junior. For the seventh time in his career, he turned around a match in which he lost the opening two sets at a Grand Slam tournament.

“The first two sets were completely different to the next three. (Sinner) was a better player at that time. After that I went to the bathroom and talked to myself in the mirror a little bit. Sometimes when there’s not much positive going on, these things are necessary ,” Djokovic said in an on-court interview.

The former world No. 1 scored his 26th consecutive victory at Wimbledon and is in the semifinals for the 11th time in London. He still holds out hope of winning the 21st Grand Slam title, with which he would catch up with the record holder Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard has 22 of them.

Djokovic can also win his first title from the big four tournaments this season. He did not start at the Australian Open due to the fact that he was not vaccinated against the coronavirus, at Roland Garros he was eliminated in the quarterfinals with eventual winner Nadal.

Maria defeated her compatriot

The turnaround was also successful for Maria. After losing the first set and the opening serve in the second set, she returned to the game against an opponent who was twelve years younger, winning four games in a row and was also able to respond to an unfavorable 2:4 situation in the last set. After almost two and a half hours of fighting, she ended the match by using the first match point.

Maria, who is a mother of two, became at the age of 34 years and 332 days the oldest debutant in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam in the so-called open era. She has never made it past the third round in a singles match. Maria is also the fourth player since 1984 to reach the top four at Wimbledon without being in the top 100 of the WTA rankings.
