In a worrying discovery, UK scientists have discovered the largest single (after life) risk factor when it comes to corona infection, hospitalization: it is obesity or overweight.
The link between excess weight and severe symptoms of COVID-19 was highlighted, after 15,100 patients with Corona virus were hospitalized across the UK, according to the study.
The study, conducted by scientists at the universities of Edinburgh, Liverpool and the Imperial College University in London, found that being overweight puts people at greater risk of hospitalization due to Corona infection, and the development of a life-threatening condition they have, according to “Russia Today” website reported.
This comes after studies in the United States, where obesity was found to be the largest chronic risk factor for hospitalization due to corona, in New York City.
This finding is alarming given that nearly 30% of adults in England are obese, while more than 60% of adults are classified as overweight.
The American study also found that males under the age of 35 who were hospitalized were more likely to be admitted to hospital if they were overweight.
Professor Peter Oppenshaw at Imperial College London, who led the UK study, said it was possible that excess fat around the internal organs would increase the “cytokine storm” caused by COVID-19 – as the body releases a lot of proteins in an attempt to fight the virus.

Another discovery in the United States showed that people who were obese, had an acute condition of corona disease, even more than cancer or lung disease.
Doctors say obese people ‘s immune systems are on constant alert when trying to protect and repair cell damage. Using all the energy to stave off inflammation indicates that the body’s defense system has few remaining resources to defend against an infection such as the SK virus.
