Distrust in party popularity ratings is growing – in Latvia – News

This year, 24% of respondents have given a positive answer to the question of whether one can trust the party’s popularity ratings, which are reflected in the Latvian mass media. Seven years ago, similarly to June last year, 26% of respondents answered in the affirmative to the same question.

This year, 62% of respondents have stated that the ratings of political forces cannot be trusted, and SKDS data show that the percentage of distrust this year is the highest since 2013. A year ago, 54% of respondents had expressed such an opinion, but in 2013, 53% thought so. The least disbelief in ratings was in 2014, when 47% of survey participants chose a negative answer.

Another 14% of respondents have had difficulty answering the question this year. Compared to June last year, the number of such respondents has decreased – last year a fifth of respondents chose the answer “difficult to say”.

“In my opinion, this data is a good counter-argument against the fairly widespread belief that ratings are a good tool for manipulation. That people vote the way they are ‘put’ by rating bars. Because how public opinion and behavior can be significantly influenced by , “the results of the survey were commented by SKDS manager Arnis Kaktins.

In his view, the root cause of this public attitude towards party ratings stems from the attitude of a large section of the public towards politics in general, that nothing related to politics, including measures of party popularity, is and cannot be pure.

Around 1,000 respondents take part in a survey every year to find out people’s trust in party popularity ratings.
