Walt Disney Animation Studios is set to debut its new exhibit, “Whimsy & Wonder,” at this year’s Animayo festival. This unique exhibition celebrates the significant contributions of women to animation,spanning from the studio’s earliest days to its vibrant present and promising future.
A Tribute to Trailblazers

The “Whimsy & Wonder” exhibit pays homage to the many talented women who have shaped disney’s legacy over the past century. Among those honored is Mary Blair, a Disney legend whose iconic mid-century art style profoundly influenced various aspects of the company. Blair’s bold and colorful vision defined Disney’s artistic direction throughout the mid-20th century. Her work continues to captivate audiences in attractions like “it’s a small world” and the grand Canyon mural at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Mary Blair not only influenced Disney’s animation style but also played a key role in the design of several Disney theme park attractions. Her unique artistic vision brought a distinctive charm to these beloved experiences.
Modern Masterminds
“Whimsy & Wonder” also shines a spotlight on the women behind modern animation hits such as Frozen, encanto, and the upcoming Moana 2. These talented individuals are leading animation into a radiant future, pushing creative boundaries and inspiring new generations of artists.
Featured Artists:
- Lorelay Bové: As a Visual Progress Artist and Associate Production Designer, Bové has contributed to films like Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph, The Princess and the Frog, and Encanto. She will also host a masterclass and portfolio review session at Animayo.
- Lisa Keen: A Production Designer and Visual Development Artist, Keen’s credits include Wish, Frozen, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and more.
- Brittney Lee: Known for her iconic costume design for Elsa in Frozen and the interior design of her ice palace, Lee is a celebrated Production Designer and Visual Development Artist.
- Griselda Sastrawinata-Lemay: As a Visual development Artist for Encanto, Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon, and Associate Production Designer on wish, Sastrawinata-Lemay has made significant contributions to recent Disney films.
- Josie Trinidad: an Emmy-winning Director and Head of Story, Trinidad’s work includes Zootopia and Ralph Breaks the Internet.
- Fawn Veerasunthorn: The Director of Wish and Head of Story on Raya and the Last dragon, Veerasunthorn is a key figure in Disney’s current animation efforts.



Animayo Festival Details
Gran Canaria’s animayo, Spain’s only Oscar-qualifying animation festival, will host the “Whimsy & Wonder” exhibit from May 7 through 10. The exhibit will be located at the Manolo millares & Elvireta Escobio hall at the Centro de Iniciativas de La Fundación La Caja de Canarias, CICCA.
