Disney speaks to people with dwarfism after criticism of Snow White remake

Disney enters into talks with people with dwarfism, following criticism of the remake of the cartoon Snowwhite and the Seven Dwarfs from 1937, a Disney spokesperson told entertainment magazine The Hollywood Reporter.

Actor Peter Dinklage (52), known from HBO series Game of Thrones, expressed his displeasure with the film, a new version of the cartoon classic with real actors, in a podcast that has yet to be released.

“I was a little surprised when they proudly announced a Latina actress like Snow White, but they still tell the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” said Dinklage. “That makes no sense. On the one hand, you’re progressive, but you’re still telling that backwards old-fashioned story about seven dwarfs in a cave?” Actress Rachel Zegler, American with Colombian roots, will play the lead role.

Disney has released a statement in response to Dinklage’s words. “To combat the reinforcing of stereotypes from the original cartoon, the seven characters will be re-imagined and we have consulted members of the dwarfism community,” a spokesperson said.
