“Disease X: The Next Potential Pandemic Warned by WHO in Jakarta”

The World Health Organization (WHO) is warning the public about the emergence of the next pandemic. Several infectious diseases have now become a priority for WHO to treat, one of which is referred to as ‘Disease X’.

In this case, Disease X is defined as an unknown disease but has the potential to cause a pandemic.

“Disease X is actually a name given to refer to a disease that is not yet known. So this is called a hypothetical disease or a disease that is predicted,” said Griffith University Australia global health security researcher Dicky Budiman when contacted by detik.com, Wednesday (24/5/ 2023).

“Even though we don’t know the disease yet, the potential is great. This is important for us to be vigilant and prepare ourselves,” he continued.

Furthermore, Dicky explained that there are several criteria that make a disease classified as Disease X. One of them, the disease can spread very quickly. Transmission of Disease X generally occurs through the air, physical contact, and also body fluids.

“Apart from being easily transmitted, the criteria for these two diseases do not yet have drugs and vaccines. The three people in general do not have immunity against these diseases, viruses or bacteria,” explained Dicky.

Disease X is a very dangerous disease. Besides being able to trigger a new pandemic, Disease X also has the last characteristic, which is to be deadly.

“X disease causes significant severity, even the death is significant. The fatality rate is at least above 20-25 percent,” concluded Dicky.
