Discounters offer protective masks at cost price

In all federal states, there is a mandatory mouth protection in shops. Many retail chains now offer disposable masks – Aldi Süd and Lidl even at cost price.

The first retail chains in Germany have been offering protective masks “at cost price” since this week. Aldi Süd began selling sets of 10 in its first branches on Wednesday, as a company spokeswoman said. The competitor Lidl says it will sell disposable masks in all 3,200 branches from Thursday. Other chains also want to quickly include mouth-nose protection in their range.

“Due to the current corona situation, Lidl offers the supply packs at cost price,” emphasized the discounter. The 50-pack of disposable masks is said to cost 33 euros. Aldi Süd also says it does not have a profit margin and sells the set of 10 for 6.99 euros.

Cost price: This price only covers the costs for a product. This means that the costs of production, material or distribution are included, but there is no profit margin.

Lidl says it initially has a stock of 14 million disposable masks. Sold while stocks last – but only one pack per purchase and customer.

Aldi Nord will also soon be offering customers disposable or textile masks for sale, according to a survey by the German press agency. However, the discounter could not provide any information about the start of sales or the price.

Rewe, Penny and toom also want to gradually start selling protective masks from Saturday. Edeka also says it is selling masks in its markets step by step in its markets.

Drugstore chain dm sells masks when entering the shops

The Rossmann drugstore chain also plans to offer protective masks in its first branches this week. For the time being, Rossmann rival dm is still limited to selling single masks to customers without protective masks at a price of one euro before entering the shops. “Regular sales of face masks cannot currently be guaranteed in the current exceptional situation,” emphasized dm boss Christoph Werner.

The procurement of the products is very difficult due to the worldwide demand. The face masks of the dm brand Mivolis are no longer available until further notice, since they are produced in France and are therefore affected by the decree on the export of respiratory masks by the French government, which was decided by decree.
