Disassembly reveals unexpected detail about the new Apple Watch

The new Apple Watch Series 7 uses the same screen technology as the iPhone 13 – which may explain why Apple first could not say when the watch would go on sale.

The hardware nerds on the technology and repair site Ifixit has put his teeth into the Apple Watch Series 7, the latest version of the Cupertino company’s smartwatch.

Thinner screen with combined layers

Ifixit has been assisted by three former Apple engineers, and something interesting was discovered during the disassembly.

One of the most important news with the Apple Watch Series 7 is that the screen has become slightly larger compared to previous models. Ifixit’s review now shows that the watch’s oled panel is built with the same “one-cell touch” technology as the screens in the Iphone 13 phones.

This means that the touch sensor, which converts your prints into digital signals that the watch understands, and the OLED panel are combined in one and the same layer in the screen.

The advantages of the layout are several. Among other things, the screen can be made thinner, and fewer screen layers also means lower production costs.

“Complex manufacturing process”

This, according to Ifixit, could probably be the reason why Apple surprisingly first could not provide an exact release date for the Apple Watch Series 7 at launch in September.

Problems at the start of production of the new screens led to the technology giant fearing that major delays were to be expected.

“The production of screens is associated with some of the most complex logistics chains and manufacturing processes in the technology industry,” the site writes.

There were no major delays, however, and sales of the new smartwatch began in mid-October.

Got a bigger battery

Ifixit also notes that the battery has become a little bigger in this year’s version of the Apple Watch. However, it has no effect on battery life, which is still “up to 18 hours”, similar to previous models.

That the Apple Watch Series 7 got a larger and thus more energy-intensive screen is probably the explanation, the site writes.
