Director Jean-Luc Godard died – News

He became most famous for experimenting with the cinematic form, such as the use of axial editing and non-fiction work.

He changed the history of cinema with his film U konce s dech, in which he filmed a subject of a crime story in an unconventional way. The protagonist of the film was played by Jean-Paul Belmondo.

With his work in the 1960s, Godard has become the most famous and most radical representative of the French New Wave, which has espoused a program of realism, which can mainly be achieved through long uninterrupted shooting. Among his films, let’s recall a few at random: Woman is a Woman, Live Your Life, Soldier, Contempt, Married Woman, Crazy Petříček.

Godard’s life was wild. He was born into a wealthy Franco-Swiss family. His father was a doctor who owned a private clinic and his mother came from a wealthy family of Swiss bankers. He studied in Switzerland and later at the Lyceum in Paris. While studying ethnology at the Sorbonne, he attended a film club in the Latin Quarter and joined the company of future directors of the 1960s. Due to the fact that he participated financially in some of the photos, the family stopped financially supporting him. The bohemian life of the young artists led him to a short stay in prison.

He got a job as a dam worker in Switzerland and after his mother’s death made his first short film Operation Concrete (1954). He started shooting with short films. His turning point came in 1959 with the film U konce s dech.

In 1960 he married Chanel model Anna Karina in Switzerland, whose face he celebrated in seven films. The marriage broke up and in 1967 he married Anne Wiazemsky and made The Chinese Woman with her, a pop art-style film.
