Digital twin for industry: AWS IoT Twin Maker is generally available

AWS IoT Twin Maker is now generally available, Amazon Web Systems announced at the AWS Summit in San Francisco. IoT Twin Maker is an AWS service that provides tools for creating digital twins. To create virtual images of a physical environment, users use data from various data sources. In addition, existing 3D models can be linked to real data. Dashboards to display the data can be built via a Grafana plugin and in Amazon Managed Grafana on AWS.

The release version of IoT Twin Maker also extends the range of functions compared to the preview version. This allows users to attach a motion indicator to objects in 3D scenes. In addition to the available alert tags and a colored overlay, the Motion Indicator now shows the speed of movement. The forms of representation available for this are LinearPlanefor conveyor belts, LinearCylinder for tubes and CircularCylinder for blenders. Another new feature is the templating of scenes. All data bindings such as tags or model shaders are thus automatically added to templates that users determine in the console.

In addition, AWS revised the API. The changes include a new filter for the ListEntities-API that allows users to filter by external IDs. Also a new type that creates timestamps in ISO-8601 format, which also captures nanoseconds. The update type is also new CREATE, which allows users to specifically indicate that intent when updating an entity. So far only existed UPDATE and DELETE.

Digital twins are a digital representation of a physical system that is as realistic as possible. With constant data updates, the twin mimics the structure and behavior of the system being imaged, serving as a prediction tool. Not only factories, industrial plants and production lines can be simulated with it. The EU recently commissioned a digital twin of the Earth to predict natural disasters and climate change. Digital twins of people to simulate lifestyle habits are also being discussed in healthcare.

In addition to AWS IoT Twin Maker, Amazon also announced the general availability of Amazon Aurora Serverless v2 and AWS Amplify Studio at the AWS Summit. Further information on Twin Maker and application examples to understand can be found in Amazon’s press release and up GitHub.
