Diekirch clings to tradition in costumes

“In Diekirch, the carnival is in our blood,” explains 80-year-old accordion player Christiane. She and her friends from the choir braved the cold on Sunday and created a good atmosphere on the Place de la Liberation. Pirates, clowns and animals of all kinds filled the streets of the city center in the afternoons. Young and old enjoyed the event, watched the group dance and sing and from time to time also let themselves be carried away.

Because of the pandemic, the famous cavalcade had to be canceled. For the residents of the city in the north of the country, completely doing without the colorful tradition was out of the question. Most Diekirch people mark the date of the carnival parade in bold on the calendar every year. This time, too, they came in large numbers to “experience a little joy again”, says 32-year-old Luis. Anyone who knows Diekircher Kavalkade also knows Diekircher donkeys. It is hardly surprising that they were also there with their costumes.

The organizers of the event had asked the residents to participate disguised on their windows and balconies. Instead of sweets, there were “Stay safe” sets in the Corona year. Even if most of the revelers were sad to have to do without a real move, the festive atmosphere and the sunshine made their hearts beat faster.
