“Did the otolaryngology waiting list justify hiring an outside professional?”

Viterbo – The report by Stefano Innocenzi, Fpcgil territorial manager for doctors and health managers

Viterbo – We receive and publish – In this very delicate moment in our country to cope with a global health criticality dictated by the Coronavirus emergency, we want to express our deepest thanks to the work done by our doctors, nurses and all health personnel which has been committed tirelessly for almost a year now to guaranteeing health care to all citizens with professionalism, self-denial and generosity.

The emergency period we are experiencing has resulted in an important commitment of economic and human resources in the healthcare sector, important institutional investments, donations from individuals, hiring of young professionals but also of professionals who are now retired.

In this context, the anomalous recruitment of a retired otolaryngology specialist stands out, assumed by resolution no.1263 of 17/06/2020 motivated by the demolition of the waiting list formed in the period of suspension of outpatient activity; this freelance office was then renewed with resolution no. 2815 of 29/12/2020 for another six months, always with the same purpose.

While appreciating the commendable spirit of sacrifice that distinguishes all those professionals who, albeit retired, have decided to return to dedicating themselves to patient care, some important considerations cannot be overlooked.

Did the waiting list for otolaryngological services justify hiring an external professional?

It would seem not. In fact, the same doctors on staff have managed to break down the waiting list created during the first lockdown in just four months using only a small number of additional services. Anyone can try to book an ENT visit and have feedback on what is written.

But who requested this service?

In answering this question we cannot fail to note that the first resolution n.1263 of 17/06/2020 was consequent to a request signed by the company health director, the second resolution n.2815 of 29/12/2020 by the director of Uoc Primary Care . Why was it not the same company medical director who renewed a job that he himself had requested?

What is the financial commitment of this hiring operation?

Against about 15 thousand euros spent in four months for additional services carried out by all otolaryngologists in the workforce, the ASL has committed 53 thousand euros up to 31/12/2020 and has provided for another 35 thousand euros for the contractual renewal of the external professional.

But isn’t this public money? Could they have been better invested? Could the professional be employed differently? Surely.

But why is the Fpcgil doctors and health managers and health professions interested in this case? Because for many months we have been questioned by honest health professionals who cannot bear to see that in an emergency like the one we are experiencing, public money is misused, with poorly targeted and unjustified interventions, tarnishing the image of public health built day after day by serious and tireless health professionals who put themselves at the service of the entire population.

The evil of the few must not soil the work of the many.
