Did Romance Evolve from Ancient Ape Bromance?

VIVA techno – Love is perhaps the hallmark of humanity. But a new theory suggests that romance may have evolved from the bromance between ancient apes.

According to anthropologist Aaron Sandel of the University of Texas at Austin, human romantic relationships resemble the close friendships formed by male chimpanzees, suggesting that the ability to develop close emotional bonds may have arisen in the common ancestor of the two species.

Previously, scientists have searched for the evolutionary roots of human love for other monogamous animals. However, according to Sandel, humans are not inherently monogamous and our partnerships are more accurately characterized as deep pairings than fidelity.

Another line of research posits that the ability to form romantic relationships evolved from the mother-infant bond that exists in many mammals, according to the IFL Science website, Friday, June 9, 2023.

However, as Sandel points out, the behaviors involved in pair bonding and mother-infant bonding differ, including aspects of grooming, reciprocity, and sexual behavior.

Researchers noted that chimpanzees did not form pair bonds with their partners. However, the intimate friendships that do arise between male chimpanzees share many characteristics with human romance.

“Part of the evolutionary puzzle is that our closest relatives, the great apes, including chimpanzees and bonobos, do not form enduring bonds with mates,” the researchers explained in a statement.
